Wheat free dog treats

I made these wheat free dog treats this morning, my three dogs love them (1 Great Pyrenees and 2 mini Australian Shepherds). I did however add small pieces of dried apple to the cookies just to add some more flavor. Will definitely be making more of these treats.

Can you use egg whites instead of whole eggs in this wheat free dog treat?

I have not tried this, but would like to know what recipes you might have that are NO Fat. Could you include dietary information on your recipes? I have a 5 yr. old GSP with chronic pancreatitis.

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, you can use egg whites only instead of the whole egg. However you need to double the amount of egg whites to compensate for the lack of the egg yolk. So, for example in this recipe that calls for 2 whole eggs, you would use 4 egg whites.

Another dog treat recipe that has very little fat is the Salad Dog Treat.

I hope that helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

First time dog treat baker

by Sunanda

Hi, I am a first time baker. I got the ingredients exactly as per the recipe and while I was mixing the ingredients, it smelled fabulous.

However, I faced two issues - there is a strong egg smell in the cookies. I tried tasting it since they looked very pretty but the smell of eggs just put me off. While my dog might love that smell, I just wanted to know if that is the way it is meant to be since we are making Dog nibbles!

My second problem is under-cooking in the middle despite cooking it for longer.

I would definitely like to try again and make perfect cookies for my dog so please help.

Chef's Answer ~ I'd be happy to help a new dog treat baker. :) My first question is - did your dog like the treats? That will be your first indicator if you baked good dog treats. :)

The egg smell is interesting. When I made these I don't remember having a strong egg smell. However, if you don't like the smell, I could see only putting one egg in the dough. If the dough is too dry to hold together because of omitting an egg, I would add one tablespoon of unsweetened applesauce at a time and stir thoroughly. If it's still too dry, and another tablespoon until your dough holds together.

Now for your problem of under-cooking. Did you make the treats small like the recipe says? These nibbles are just that, small little bites about the size of a teaspoon. If you made larger treats, then yes, they will need longer baking time. Also, if the dog treats were thick you will need to do one of two things. Either flatten the dog treat or bake at a lower temperature for longer.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

I hope this helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

Somebody stole the dog treats

Gina, the dog that can't wait

Gina, the dog that can't wait

Regards the apple carrot cookies, we found that apple sauce can easily be made at home by steaming apples. However, it's best to remove the skin - easy when the apples are cooked. Also, the carrots really need to be fine, best slightly cooked and pureed. Mashing the ingredients makes the dough really smooth and easy to cut. The cookies are yummy, for the dogs and their humans.

We've already tried the sweet potato chews, the turkey cookies (by replacing the turkey with canned salmon) and the pumpkin peanut butter cookies. They didn't survive the afternoon.

The first batch was stolen by dog Gina (see picture). The second was eaten by her and her brother, and the third batch ended up in the stomach three humans who munched them for coffee. Too bad for the dogs...

Homemade apple sauce substitution
by: Anonymous

I am all for the home made substitutions, more than half of my dogs' treats and food is made by me with ingredients fit for human consumption. With Apples you have to especially be careful of the seeds.

Just so you know my dogs do eat way better than I do, but they deserve it.
