Do you have a recipe for diabetic dog treats?

by Robert Peterson

My dog Gizmo has diabetes and it is very hard for me to find someone that makes dog treats specific to his needs. Do you know of anyone or have a recipe that I can use to make him some dog treats?

Thank you.

Chef's Answer ~ Diabetic dog treats can be tough to find. There are a couple things to keep in mind when looking for other acceptable treats. First, let me direct you to another visitor's question that I answered. Her question was Is there such a thing as diabetic dog treats?

Second, look for dog treat recipes with no sugar. Even "hidden sugar" that could be in such things as bananas or honey. Then stick with foods that are low on the Glycemic Index, like sweet potatoes and pumpkin. Start with recipes that include those ingredients, for example the sweet potato dog chew.

I hope this gets you and Gizmo started down the right track. :)

I make all kinds of treats for diabetic dogs
by: Chef to the diabetic dogs with refined tastebuds

I have a diabetic dog as well and he has to have the most distinguished taste-buds on this planet.

I started cooking and baking for him a couple of years ago and he along with several other animals who have eaten them have never sent one plate back to the kitchen. *smile*
