He really liked these homemade dog treats

by Celeste
(Livonia, LA)

They were very easy to make and they came out exactly as the picture. My dog loves them.

With 4 kids in the house, he gets one every time someone goes to the fridge.

Easy and a Favorite Homemade Dog Treat!

by Beth
(Tampa FL)

My kids (dogs) are bacon-hounds, I'm sure most dogs are. We only eat traditional "pig" bacon when we have family over (we are health conscious and eat turkey bacon) so my babies don't get this recipe that often, but they love it when they do.

It's very easy and any dog will definitely love it! I make only a small batch because of the grease not being healthy and they only get one a day.

Substitute for bacon grease?

We buy pre-crumbled bacon bits from costco -(real bacon, no hassle) so what can I use to substitute for the bacon grease???

Chef's Answer ~ Excellent question! You can use extra virgin olive oil or canola oil in place of the bacon grease.

How would I use this dough with a dog bone shaped pan?

by Gabbie
(NW, Washignton )

It's a small pan with 5 dog bone shapes in it. Would I just lightly press the dough into the shapes?

Chef's Answer ~ No, I don't think you could use a different pan without making adjustments to the recipe. The consistency of dough when you roll it out for cut out cookies and when you bake dough in a pan is quite different.

I would start with adding 1/4 cup extra of water to this recipe. That may be enough liquid to make your dough more pourable into your pan.

Is it necessary to use the flax and bran in this dog treat recipe?

by AJ
(Kentucky)

Is it necessary to use the flax and bran?

I have everything else around the house besides those 2 ingredients!

Chef's Answer ~ No, you don't have to use ground flax or the wheat bran. We included these extra healthy ingredients because it helps to offset the richer ingredients of the bacon and bacon grease.

You can omit these two but you will need to replace the 1/2 cup (the flax and bran together) with something else. You could use a 1/2 cup extra of whole wheat flour if that's what you have available.

I hope this helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)
