Substitution for brown rice in this organic dog treat?

by Anne O
(USA)

My dogs have allergies to rice, wheat, corn, yeast, potatoes, carrots, milk, beef and peanuts. Can I substitute rolled oats for the rice? Thanks for the tip about beans to replace the carrots ---- would pumpkin work also?

Chef's Answer ~ I think the rolled oats is a fantastic idea to replace the brown rice. You could also try other cooked grains, if your dogs will tolerate them. For example cooked quinoa, couscous or bulgar wheat.

As far as substituting the carrots for pumpkin is also a wonderful idea. You could also replace the carrots with green beans and then add pure pumpkin and reduce the amount of tomato sauce. For example if you use a 1/4 cup of pure pumpkin, you could reduce the tomato sauce to 1/4 cup.

When you are mixing all of the ingredients, use your best judgement as to whether or not you need to adjust the "batter" to be more wet or dry.

I hope this helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

I thought turkey was supposed to be bad for dogs...

by MichelleO
(Penn, Pa)

I really want to start making all of my dog's food. He is having a lot of skin issues. I am convinced that the preservatives are to blame. Is turkey something safe to feed dogs? I always was told it is not.

Chef's Answer ~ You usually hear reports around Thanksgiving that turkey is not good for dogs. This is because of all the extra food that is typically served around this time of year.

The cooked bones of a turkey are not safe for your dog, as they may splinter when chewed. However, plain white meat turkey is a safe, lean and healthy food for your dog.

Be sure to check with your dogs Vet to make sure that whatever homemade dog food you make is nutritionally complete for your individual dogs needs.
