Is it okay for dogs to eat cream cheese?

by Gail Hundley

I love your recipe for Creme Filled Sandwich Cookies. I think they will be great for helping our dog take her medicine. I was just wondering if it is okay to give dogs cream cheese as I read somewhere that dairy products are hard on their digestion.

Chef's Comments ~ You're right, some dogs can be sensitive to dairy, or even lactose intolerant. It is unlikely that after one or two treats with a small amount of cream cheese, or other dairy, that your dog will show any symptoms. However, if you notice any symptoms (such as diarrhea or other abdominal distress), you may want to consult your Vet and then limit or completely cut out dairy from your dog's diet.

Limiting or omitting dairy from your dog's diet does not mean you can't bake homemade dog treats! :) Simply use lactose free milk, soy milk, and other non-dairy alternatives like tofu cream cheese.

Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

Dairy, Pork and Additives/preservatives
by: Anonymous

It is correct dairy can cause distress in dogs, especially small breeds. Also bacon and any pork product is not good for dogs period. It causes intestinal issues.

It is better to avoid these items altogether because there are times when a dog will show minimal or no symptoms, yet they can be in distress for days.

Please remember even when you use human grade ingredients, most still have preservatives and additives in them. The only true way to avoid preservatives is using organic and free range products.
