Very easy dog treat recipe!!

I baked this cookies for my little dog today, they were very easy! As I didn't have any corn meal I used corn flour instead and added to the mix some bacon beggin strips which my dog loves already and I used the yolk frosting, my dog loved the cookies!

Great dog biscuit recipe!

by Sandee
(Bradenton, Fl)

My Micki girl has been diagnosed with kidney disease and commercial dog treats are a big no-no for her now.

I use chicken flavored soup base to make this already low-sodium treat even lower in sodium. 180 mg to 16 oz and you only use 2 oz. I'll let you do the math.

She loves them. I keep them in the freezer to give her a cold treat. Thanks to for coming up with this idea.

This is a great dog treat recipe!!!

This was super easy! My beagle loves them. I added some peanut butter (but make sure to add extra flour if you're going to use peanut butter.)

I pressed them out on the counter-top, but added flour first (the dough's really sticky!). I will definitely use this recipe again!!!

My dog gobbled this treat up, Yay!

by Hannah

My dog loves these treats and they are very healthy! I dropped one on the floor and she gobbled it up! She is a mix of a Dachshund and Jack Russel and when it is April 12, 2012 she will turn 2!

Super Easy!

I made one batch with chicken stock and another using beef & vegetable baby food and omitting the milk. Both turned out great!

Thanks for the awesome recipe!

Quick and easy recipe

by Vivian
(Bay Area, CA)

My mini schnauzer loved this recipe. I swear she waits in the kitchen while they're baking.

The recipe is very easy to follow and easy to double or triple to make extra for other doggie friends.

I tried this with beef and chicken broth and she likes them both equally. She especially likes them when they come out soft soon after they are baked. Thanks for the recipe.

Can I use whole milk in this dog treat recipe?

by Dottie
(Lewiston, Maine)

I have never made this recipe and was wondering if I can use whole milk instead of the low-fat? Thank you.

Chef's Answer ~ Yes! You can substitute whole milk in most of my dog treat recipes. The main reason we use low or fat free milk is to keep extra fat out of our dog's diet. That way they can sneak an extra homemade treat or two.

I hope that helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

Recipe Questions

by Elizabeth Payne
(Georgia)

For the ingredient listing it says 1 egg for egg wash, but says to mix egg in the whole mixture? Is that a typo? Also, would it be OK to substitute olive oil for canola oil?

Chef's Answer ~ The ingredient list actually has two eggs listed. One egg is listed between the chicken broth and milk. The second egg is listed at the bottom of the ingredient list for the wash.

Yes, substituting extra virgin olive oil for the canola oil would be just fine. :)

Can I use enriched white flour instead of wheat flour?

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, you can. However, whole wheat flour is more nutritious than white flour. You can also use a variety of wheat or gluten free flours in your dog treat recipes.

The recipe I currently use seems to puff when cooked and becomes hollow in the middle and breaks. What would be some of the reasons for that?

by Roberta Anderson
(Rumney NH)

I haven't tried this yet but will. It looks great and easy.

Can you use a white flour instead of wheat??

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, you can use white flour instead of wheat flour. However, whole grain wheat flour has more nutrition in it than white. So, you may want to purchase a small bag just for your homemade dog treats.

To be able to troubleshoot another dog treat recipe, I would need to know exactly what and how much of each ingredient is used to be able to really know what could be going wrong.

With that said though, there are a couple reasons your dog treats may be puffing up and being hollow in the middle. First, check your ovens temperature with an oven thermometer. Just because the dial says 350, doesn't mean it really is that temperature inside. It's also possible that your recipe has too much leavening agents, like baking powder or baking soda. Or, you may be accidentally over mixing the batter which over activates the leavening and creates air bubbles.

I hope that helps! :)

Can I substitute the cornmeal?

Can I substitute oats for the cornmeal? My Vet says "no" to cornmeal, white flour, etc.!

Thanks, this is my first time here and I am sure I will be back often!

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, I think substituting rolled oats for the cornmeal in this recipe would work.

I would recommend putting the 1/3 cup of oats in a food processor and pulsing the machine a few times until you have a smaller oat. That will keep the texture similar to the cornmeal and make it easier for you to roll out the finished dough and cut into shapes.

If you aren't going to roll the dough, and are going to make rounded drop dog cookies instead, using the rolled oats "as is" would work, too.

chicken broth treats
by: Jeannie

Do puppy treats made with chicken broth need to be refrigerated? Chicken tends to spoil left out so I am concerned by this.

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, most homemade dog treats need to be refrigerated because they do not contain preservatives. The storing instructions for the chicken broth dog biscuits says to store them in the fridge for about 4 weeks.
