Aren't almonds bad for dogs?

by Sarah
(Des Moines, IA)

On a list of possible poisonous foods for dogs that our vet gave us listed almonds. Not sure if they should be included in the recipe.

Chef's Answer ~ Thank you for your concern. Almonds are OK for most healthy dogs in moderation.

Nuts in general are very high in fat. Although this is a good fat, it can still cause upset tummies if your dog has a high amount.

However, you can always check with your Vet and follow her guidance.

I hope this helps. Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)

Trail Mix Dog Cookies

Michelle:

In the Instructions section of this recipe you have listed Papaya, but it does not appear in the Ingredients list. Can you tell me how much to use?

Also, instead of the extra Olive Oil if the dough doesn't stick, is it ok to use honey?

Thank you - Cathy

Chef's Answer ~ Wow, you have a great eye for detail! :) I accidentally added papaya to the instructions of the recipe. It's not pictured on the plate of ingredients and I did not add it to the cookies I've made. That being said, you could easily add papaya to your trail mix dog cookies recipes. I would add an 1/8 cup of papaya to these cookies. But I would do one of two things. Either take out another 1/8 cup of one of the ingredients so that the cookies will still stick together. Or, you can keep the recipe as is, add papaya and then be ready with about a tbsp extra of flour and a tsp or two of olive oil to ensure the cookie dough comes together well.

Yes, it is OK to use honey. You will want to add it slowly, and even warm it in the microwave first so it will pour more evenly over your dog cookie dough. Start with just a tablespoon and add more if needed.

I hope this has answered your questions. Thanks again for finding my typo, I appreciate it! :)

Can I stuff this in my dogs Kong?

can i put the trail mix dog cookies in her "kong" to chew on?

Chef's Answer ~ Sure! :) Just be sure to clean it well after your dog is done chewing and playing with the Kong. Since these are homemade dog treats, there are no preservatives. So, you can stuff your dogs Kong and let her play and eat out of it for about a day, but no longer than two days.

You can easily clean your dogs Kong by emptying as much as you can in the garbage, rinsing out the rest and then putting it in the dishwasher to get the stubborn pieces that won't quite come out. Oh, and if a piece gets lodged in the tiny hole at the top, pop it out with a toothpick!

Have fun baking and playing! :)
