Is flax meal good for dogs?

by Christina Leo
(Nashville, TN USA)

Today, I made the liver and cheese treats with spelt flour in place of brown rice flour. I often make banana muffins for the two-legged family and use part spelt, part flax meal. I wondered about doing the same for Zappa. I would think the benefits of flax would be similar for dogs. What's your experience with flax and dog treats?

Incidentally, Zappa LOVED the liver and cheese treats!

Thanks for your website.

Chef's Answer ~ Yes flax meal is great for dogs, and you're right, the health benefits are pretty much the same as their human family members.

You can substitute the flour in almost all of my dog treat recipes. If you wanted to replace 1/4 to a 1/2 of the amount of flour with flax meal, I think that would be a wonderful idea! :)

Also, check out my Cheesy Flax Squares recipe for dog treats. If Zappa liked the cheese in the liver treats, I bet these will be met with glee! :) This recipe uses a whole cup of ground flax, so it packs a nutty and healthy punch.

Happy Dog Treat Baking! :)
