Can I use a flour other than wheat flour for homemade dog treats?

by Yasmin

My dog is sensitive to wheat flour so I was wondering if I could use another type of flour. If so which one(s).

Chef's Answer ~ Yes, you can and should use a different kind of flour if your dog is sensitive to wheat. You can substitute one for one any gluten and/or wheat free flour. Most major grocery stores will carry brown rice flour. Or, if you go to a health food store, you'll have many more choices including potato flour, tapioca flour and many more.

I hope this helps you and your dog bake healthy homemade dog treats! :)

different flours to use 4 dogs w/ allergies
by: Karen Gramm

Our dog has a lot of food allergies. He can't have wheat or white flour. We went to our health food store and they suggested garbanzo or coconut flour. We have used the garbanzo. If the recipe calls for 1 cup of wheat we use 1 cup plus about 1/2 of a 1/4 cup to thicken up the batter. It works well and Piston loves the treats.

Can I use all purpose flour?

Chef's Comments ~ All purpose flour is just bleached wheat flour, so no, that would not be a good flour to use if your dog is sensitive to wheat.
