This was extremely sticky even when I added water.

I found that this recipe was impossible to roll out. Needless to say, there was a huge mess. How do I solve this? Also, I would like to know how many this recipe should make if you only make the balls. Even through all this, my dog loved them.

Chef's Answer ~ I'm glad to hear your dog loved them, but I'm sorry it didn't go very well.

If you choose to make this recipe again, especially since your dog appreciated your efforts, I have three troubleshooting ideas for you.

1. Try refrigerating your dough for 30 minutes. When dough has a chance to cool it is usually easier to roll out.
2. You will also want to liberally flour the rolling pin and counter where you're rolling the dough. Then, keep dusting with flour if things start sticking.
3. One trick to rolling out dough, that I haven't tried yet, is to place a piece of plastic wrap on your counter, then your dough, then another piece of plastic wrap. Then start to roll out the dough that is now sandwiched between the wrap. If you try this, and it works, please let me know! :)

If you made drop cookies instead of rolling out the dough you should be able to make approximately 3 dozen, 1 1/2" cookies. This number will vary depending on the size of the dog cookie.

I realized after reading your question that I did not have these tips in this recipe. I'll change that so hopefully others won't have the same troubles.

If you still have problems, be sure to let me know! :)

less sticky if kneaded NEW

My dogs adore this cookie. I find if I knead the dough on a silpat for a couple of minutes then the stickiness goes away and the dough rolls out wonderfully.

Sticky dough solution NEW

Just add more flour until it isn't too sticky to roll out. I've made this recipe several times now for my dog. She's pretty particular about her treats in general, which is why I tried homemade ones in the first place. She does seem to like these better when I put in more peanut butter than the recipe calls for. I think I put in a heaping 1/2 cup.

I kneaded flour into the dough before rolling out so it became like the consistency of sugar cookie dough. It worked great and made it very easy to cut out, hope this helps.
