Making pet food...Just beginning.

Baxter!

I read that allergies in pets can be from:

Wheat
Corn
Chicken
Chicken eggs
Beef
Dairy and
Soy

I use cottage cheese which is dairy, but only occasionally. Mostly I use turkey meat, oatmeal, rice, green beans, carrots and celery.
I am also aware that sweet potatoes are good. I will try them next.
When making a pet food as with a baby, take it slow and watch for reactions. I am also going to try pet treats. My dachshund gets terrible skin acne and is improving since I went to an organic store bought food. I'm hoping to see greater results by making his food from scratch.

Chef's Notes ~ This picture of Baxter is adorable! Thanks for sharing. :)

Allergy process of elimination NEW
by: Katherine

Good morning and thank you for the informative post. Maybe you can help with my allergy questions. I recently found out that my dog has allergies; the vet said they don't do allergy tests on dogs and that we have to figure it out slowly by a process of elimination, starting with food. Do you have any idea of how I should start this process of elimination, and/or if there are more common items I should start with? I have a 2-year-old German Shep mix.

Chef's Comments ~ Your vet is right a process of elimination is the way to go. You may want to start with a high quality dog food that does not contain grains. Your vet should be able to help you too if you have any questions. Hopefully other website visitors can help out, too. :)
Thanks for any help you can offer.
Katherine
