Made several batches of dog treats, now have tips to share

I make these treats for two large dogs, one pit bull and one wolf-like mix.

Since they are bigger dogs, I make the treats much thicker and much dryer than the original recipe. If I don't make them really hard/dry and thick, the dogs simply inhale them! They are about an inch thick and an inch and a half around. I bake them for about 10 minutes more than the recipe calls for, turn off the oven, and let them sit on the tray in the warm oven for a couple hours or overnight.

Also, the harder they are, the longer they seem to keep - less moisture to allow for mold.

My biggest tip is to keep them in a paper bag instead of a plastic one and they will last longer. The plastic bags or containers hold in the moisture.

Adding more water to the recipe will make it more sticky. Adding more flour or oats to the recipe will make it less sticky. Also, try rolling the dough out on top of oats instead of on top of flour, it works well for me.

The dogs I make these for prefer these treats to any other treat they're offered!

Thicker Dog Treats? NEW
by: Meeghan

We also have three large dogs at home and most of their play mates are bigger than 40 lbs. We tried making the cookies bigger at first, with bigger cutters, but they simply don't keep well as there is too much moisture.

We never thought to try them bigger, since that didn't seem to work.. but I will have to try our next batch with your dimensions and see how it goes!

My only concern is their weight - we went smaller thinking that they wouldn't eat so many, but then of course they just get more cookies!

Thanks for the great idea!
